nutritionDay worldwide 10 November 2022
nutritionDay: the largest international database on nutrition risk and care in healthcare facilities
nutritionDay (nDay) is a worldwide initiative aiming to raise awareness on disease-related malnutrition and nutritional care processes currently in use in hospital wards, intensive care units and nursing homes facilities. The nutritionDay audit was founded in 2006 by experts of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and of the Medical University of Vienna and it has been carried on every year as a one-day cross-sectional audit in November. To date, the project has collected data from more than 281,000 patients and residents in over 71 countries worldwide.
The audit aims to serve as a tool to assess the prevalence of malnutrition in the participating units and to collect data on patients’ characteristics, malnutrition risk factorsand quality indicators of nutritional care. Annual participation to nutritionDay allows benchmarking and annual monitoring of nutrition care structures and processes in the unit.
Participation to the audit is easy and free of charge. All documents and information for participation are downloadable from the nutritionDay website.
The nutritionDay questionnaires
The audit is based on questionnaires specifically developed through the years for four different settings hospital wards, oncology wards,ICU and nursing homes. Hospital questionnaires were updated in 2016 to include quality indicators of nutrition care. In 2018, the Hospital Express version was launched. This is a compact form of the original hospital questionnaires representing only short assessment of selected aspects of nutrition care in the unit. No prior knowledge is needed to fill out the questionnaires.
Questionnaires systematically record data about patient food intake, weight loss and nutritional support, as well as other factors related to the facility, staff and current clinical practices . In the year 2020, specific questions on COVID-19 have also been included in the questionnaires. Outcome of patients recruited on nutritionDay is collected 30, 60 or 180 days after nDay respectively for the category Hospital, ICU and Nursing Homes.
The audit is patient-centeredas patients themselves are asked to respond to an easy set of questions about their food intake, habits and health status. Information are also collected by the unit healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, dietitians) which give clinical feedback on the health status of the same patients. Questionnaire are available in more than 30 languages to be able to include the majority of the patients in the unit.
The nutritionDay unit reports for benchmarking
Upon participation, units receive a comprehensive graphical report on their unit data with regional and worldwide comparison to units from the same specialty. Repeated participation allows benchmarking as well as monitoring of the nutrition care and its structure elements in the unit. Units are thus empowered, by available data, to determine local needs, to bring attention to specific area which need changes as well as to allow unit data comparison at a local and international level. Only for hospital category nutritionDay provides National Reports which show aggregated results from all participating units in a country in a year.
The nutritionDay worldwide research
The large nDay database, with data from 281000 patients and residents, allows national and international analysis on nutrition care elements and processes in hospitalized patients and nursing homes residents. Large data analysis results, published in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications highlight the importance of monitoring major risk factors associated to malnutrition and poor outcome, point out to current practices and existing quality indicators of nutrition care and its association with possible gaps in the management of patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.
Researchers interested in carrying on a research project using nutritionDay data are welcome to submit a research proposal in English to the nDay scientific Board.

Call for Papers - COVID and Nutrition
Call for Papers - COVID and Nutrition
IMPORTANT UPDATEDear Colleagues,
at ESPEN and WHO/Europe we are very grateful for your high interest in this call, and for the many submissions received. We are confident this will significantly enhance evidence-based knowledge in the crucial field of nutrition for COVID-19 patients. As unfortunately the pandemic is still strongly affecting many parts of the world, we have decided to EXTEND THE DEADLINE for paper submission until May 1st 2021. We therefore further encourage you to collect your data on all aspects of nutrition in COVID-19 patients, as previously described, and to consider submitting them to Clinical Nutrition.
COVID-19 has posed huge healthcare, social and economic challenges worldwide during the past few months. Clinical outcome is poorer in several patient groups at risk for malnutrition. Persons with obesity are also at higher clinical risk. Nutritional care is therefore of utmost relevance in all COVID-19 patients and may play an important role also in disease prevention. Despite the relevance of nutritional research in COVID-19, available evidence is extremely limited. From over 75.000 publications on COVID-19 available in PubMed, only 1200 are retrieved when adding nutrition in the search, and just 169 when malnutrition is used as key-word.
Strengthening the evidence on the potential key role of nutritional status and nutritional care in COVID-19 is therefore an unmet clinical need and an urgent priority. ESPEN and World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) have discussed this topic and agreed to open a call for papers on nutritional status and nutritional care in COVID-19 patients, to be hosted in the ESPEN Journals Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition ESPEN. The call will be guest-edited by ESPEN and WHO/Europe officers.
Submissions are encouraged on various aspects of nutrition and COVID-19 in all clinical settings (home-care, hospital wards, Intensive Care Unit - ICU) with special priority for (but not limited to):
- Malnutrition risk and diagnosis in COVID-19 patient cohorts and their impact on clinical outcome.
- Special patient groups: older adults; chronic diseases including renal disease, heart disease, liver disease, cancer, diabetes and others; ICU.
- Medical nutrition treatment in COVID-19 patients and its impact on clinical outcomes in all clinical settings.
- Micronutrients status in COVID-19 patients and their impact on risk of infection and COVID-19 clinical outcome.
- Obesity and malnutrition in COVID-19 and their impact on outcome.
- Organization of nutritional assessment and nutritional care in all clinical settings to face the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Impact on nutrition-related policies during the COVID-10 pandemic including social and economic determinants. All papers must be submitted to Clinical Nutrition with the article type: COVID-19 and if eligible for publication will be offered publication on either Clinical Nutrition or Clinical Nutrition ESPEN based on priority.
We hope and trust that this initiative will contribute to collect much-needed evidence on this very important but unfortunately largely neglected topic, with the ultimate goal to provide strong evidence for implementation of optimal nutritional care for COVID-19 patients and to continue nutrition promotion during the pandemic to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2.

The virtual webinar will provide insights into the drivers of childhood obesity coming from data collected through the Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) and include a panel discussion to discuss the importance of data surveillance networks – such as COSI - from a policy and governmental perspective.
